(Aside: the company I work for uses Shopify and it became total horseshit over the last years. Guess this explains a lot.)

Our CEO is pretty much looking for any solution to explain that number doesn’t go up as much anymore (which surely has nothing to do with the shit economy and people not wanting to spend as much money), and we have a surprising amount of slopmongers in middle and upper management positions who whisper into his ear that AI will solve everything.

Most of those policies and changes actually come from them.

I have tried and failed stopping the ensloppification of my company, and I have failed greatly. We now have a new policy that you have to write a justification for making a PR yourself instead of using the chatbot. All the strict checks that were implemented over the years (clear documentation, no more than x files per commit/PR, etc.) are out of the window.

This comes after the push for a fucking AI audit where every employee is supposed to justify why they are not using LLMs for certain tasks. Also some person blew the token limit with some web scraping bullshit last cycle and was lauded for embracing the technology.

Also our CEO has recently begun subtly insinuating he’s now heard of fucking AI doom cultists.

I hate everything.

As for Orion: while I like the idea of having a browser that’s neither Chromium nor Gecko in the mix, Orion is made by Kagi which, at least in the past, self-described as an AI company, so I’m not sure how much I trust their stance to keep slop machines out of it (spoiler: I don’t). Also their CEO seems like a bit of a twat.

And it’s not really open source either apart from the WebKit parts as far as I know.

From what I’ve seen, people dislike it because it’s the reason we have, for example, those stupid cookie popups everywhere, or that some services simply refuse to operate in the EU so they don’t have to comply, as if that were the GDPR’s fault and not a symptom of corporations trying to get around the regulations.

One thing that’s crazy: it’s not just skeptics, virtually EVERYONE in AI has a terrible track record - and all in the same OPPOSITE direction from usual! In every other industry, due to the Planning Fallacy etc, people predict things will take 2 years, but they actually take 10 years. In AI, people predict 10 years, then it happens in 2!
